Writing is such an abstract subject isn't it? Little ones either get it or they don't. Every year there is always one student (or more) that writes a string of every sight word they know in that day's journal entry, draws a picture of their puppy, and when prompted to read their "sentence" says " I love my puppy!" Unfortunately this child has not yet had his or her writing epiphany. Their limited concept of what writing is surrounds letters and words but not the necessarily the connection not that what we say has a written form and it is always spelled the same way.
The next series of posts will tackle these issues and will be titled "Kindergarten Writing."
